PAY IT FORWARD Mustang charity project vehicle

Scott Drake Enterprises and the Mustang Club of America have announced the winner of the PAY IT FORWARD Mustang charity project vehicle. The un-restored 1966 Ford Mustang Convertible was awarded during the 45th Anniversary of the Mustang Celebration in Birmingham, Alabama, on April 18, 2009. The winning club was Mustangs of East Texas, based in Tyler, Texas, a regional club of the Mustang Club of America.

“Scott Drake Enterprises has successfully become the largest manufacturer of classic Mustang parts over the years, and so we wanted to give something back. Moreover, we believe that Mustang enthusiasts are some of the finest, most caring people in the world. So we really wanted to both give something back, and lift up the spirit and sense of community that lives among Mustang club members,” explains CEO Scott Drake. “That is how we came up with the idea to team up with the Mustang Club of America to award a project car and $10,000 worth of parts to one regional Mustang club.”

The announcement took place on Saturday afternoon and when the winners were announced, cheers went up from members of the Mustang Club of East Texas. Craig Chesley, Regional Director of the club, said that the group was thrilled to win the car, and was ecstatic about the opportunity to restore the 1966 Ford Mustang in an effort to pay it forward.

Volunteer members of Mustangs of East Texas will diligently work as a group to restore the vehicle in just six months in order to display the fully restored Mustang in the Scott Drake Enterprises booth at the 2009 SEMA show in Las Vegas, NV. In their application to be eligible to win the vehicle, the club had listed many member volunteers who had pledged their time and talents for the restoration. In addition to the $10,000 in parts that Scott Drake Enterprises has donated, Quantum Performance has donated a motor, Kicker Stereo has donated parts, and Performance Automatic has donated a transmission. The winning club has also secured involvement with local companies which offered to assist them with everything from media blasting the body to supplying paints, parts and services for the restoration process.

After debuting at the world-famous SEMA show, the restored Mustang convertible will be auctioned, with proceeds going to the favorite charity of the Mustangs of East Texas car club, the East Texas Crisis Center.

Neil Young's 1959 Lincoln

FROM GAS GUZZLER TO GREEN MACHINE:
NEIL YOUNG TURNS HIS ’59 LINCOLN INTO AN ECO-FRIENDLY RIDE

By Shaun Smith
Assistant Publisher

Over the past year, Neil Young has worked extensively to modify his 1959 Lincoln Continental Mark IV from a gasoline-powered vehicle into a battery-powered cruiser. And, at just 9-miles-per-gallon, this concept is easy to understand in an economy as fluid as ours.

Young asked Jonathan Goodwin to help him with the project. Goodwin has had numerous cars featured on MTV’s Pimp My Ride series.

Now, one year later, this green machine can get around 80 miles per gallon! Their goal is to reach 100, and when they do, Young wants to race cross country against other green machines. Clearly, this is making a statement in the classic car hobby and grabbing a lot of attention.

Young has a collection of antiques and classics located at his California home. Young claims that he wants to make a statement about the energy crisis at hand and enforce the idea that this is a project that anyone who has a garage can work on.

Here’s how it works: a generator is powered by tiny ethanol-fueled engine powers that charge the batteries located in the trunk of the car. This, then, fuels the car’s electric motor, giving the car the power to move forward.

The engine is a 150 kilo-watt electric motor that produces 500hp and can reach speeds of 160mph.

The project is taking place in a garage in Wichita, KS. Young and Goodwin have plans to modify other existing hot rods into eco-friendly cruisers. Young looks forward to attracting the attention of one of the big auto manufacturers in hopes of sending them a message about cleaning up our environment.

Window “Sweeper” Kits for 1970-74 Dodge & Plymouth E-Bodies

Check out these beautiful new Window “Sweepers” for Dodge and Plymouth E-Bodies, from Metro Moulded Rubber Parts. Sweepers are commonly known by many different names, including “window whiskers” and “window felts”, etc. But whatever you call them, you will love the quality, the look, and the fit of these units on your Cuda or Challenger.

Window Sweepers perform several vital functions on E-Body cars, such as keeping leaves and other debris from inside the door cavity, and holding the window firmly in place as the door is opened and closed. And when your original sweepers are worn, they just cannot prevent heavy side window glass from wobbling during closure, which can lead to glass cracking and/or excessive wear of window regulators and channels. This is especially true for cars with very long doors, such as Barracudas and Challengers.

Metro’s new Sweeper Kits are USA-made from top quality materials, and are exceptionally good looking parts, which have been over-engineered to help them function as well as they look.

You’ll like the way they fit and function on your Cuda, Barracuda, or Challenger, and the fact that they continue to work so well for a long time will impress you even more. Perhaps best of all, installation is a snap.

Eureka Springs Mustang Car Show

"It's a Stampede!"

Yes it is a stampede. . . a stampede of America's favorite pony car -- the Mustang - to the Ozark's favorite Victorian Village, Eureka Springs, AR, for the 15th Annual Mustang Car Show. The show will be held April 18, 2009 in the quaint Pine Mountain Village Center on Hwy 62.

This 15th Annual event will also be a celebration of Mustang's 45th Anniversary on America's roadways. The event is FREE to the public! Invite your readers, listeners, and viewers to join us for this fantastic display of American muscle.

There will be a great mix of original and restored Mustangs and modified Mustangs of all years. There are Mustang clubs traveling from all over the midwest and as far away as Texas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

A particular highlight will be Mustangs from the "Legend Lime Registry", an internet-based international club for owners of Mustangs painted in distinctive color "Legend Lime." Planned as a regioanl event, most will be in town for several days.

The guest car club (a new annual feature) will be the Northwest Arkansas Mustang Club, of Springdale, AR. They will receive "front row" parking.

Activities begin Friday night on April 17 with an old time drive-in cruise at DJ's Drive-In at the east edge of Eureka Springs on Hwy 62. The cruise-in is open to all vehicles and will take place 7pm to 9pm.

The show kicks off Saturday at 8am. In addition to the great cars, visitors can enjoy a DJ and games, souvenirs, and a poker walk. The day's highlight will be a parade of all the Mustangs through the Eureka Springs Historical District lead by a genuine Police Mustang! The parade will return to Pine Mountain Village for a trophy presentation at 4pm.

For further questions or registration information, interested parties should contact Jim Post at 479-253-2364 or email eurekamustangs@arkansas.net. A website is under construction at this time. It is www.eurekaspringsmustangshow.com and should be available soon.

COMPLETE LIQUIDATION SATURDAY MAY 9TH 10 AM
EAST HWY 10, LAWRENCE, KANSAS

H. Z. Smith started out driving old cars (junkers) back in the 1960s as that was all he could afford. With his wife he opened H. Z. Smith Motors in Lawrence, Ks. Selling everyday cars on time and stocking a few vintage automobiles. His first old car to resell was a 1928 Chevrolet coupe.

“By the early 90s I was stocking over 300 cars,” said Smith, ”with over 100 of those in the vintage category.” At that point he was the go to dealer in the mid-west for buying or selling vintage cars or car parts. As our name grew he bought and sold cars from all over the US. H.Z. Smith cars have gone to buyers from all over the world from Canada, Mexico, England, France, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. Most of the overseas sales have gone to the Scandinavian countries.

“I became the first electric car dealer in Lawrence since 1914 in 1981 with the Comut-A-Car. The gas prices came down and the technology wasn’t there yet but to be the dealer that had the most obscure inventory has made it fun for me. From a push mower to a Harley, form a Camry to a Kaiser concept car you could get it here.”

My years in the Automobile business flew by, since I have loved cars since I was a teenager. I would love to continue to work with cars, but after 32 years time and health have forced me to give it up.

H Z Smith

Automotive Enthusiasts Should be Aware of Asbestos Risk

Automotive Enthusiasts Should be Aware of Asbestos Risk

When people mention asbestos, we often think of a hazard of many years ago that we no longer need to be concerned with. However, even as most asbestos products were banned in the late 1970’s by the Environmental Protection Agency and Consumer Product Safety Commission, many of these products still exists in industrial equipment, home construction, and yes, even older auto parts. Knowing where you may encounter these products and how to handle them can prevent a potentially life threatening exposure to asbestos.

Asbestos was used in thousands of products before production was halted. Asbestos proved to be an efficient and inexpensive insulation material. It was also very durable and its fibers could generally be included in all construction compounds. Among the more common uses of asbestos was in brake pads and friction linings in automobiles built prior to 1980.

Obviously, brake pads and brake linings generate a great deal of heat as friction is generated. The asbestos in these linings counteracted this heat and kept the pads intact and resistant to the temperature increase. Intact asbestos products do not pose a significant hazard. However, when they are modified or disturbed, they often release harmful fibers into the surrounding air supply.

Older brake pads and linings likely contain asbestos and should be treated as such. If modifying an older vehicle it is important to note if the brake pads appear very old or damaged. In these cases, it is much more important that they be handled with the appropriate protective equipment. In some cases, if the material is very compromised, it may make sense to speak with an asbestos consultant to determine a course of action.

In recent years there has been a rising incidence of mesothelioma, an aggressive asbestos-related cancer, in former auto manufacturers and auto repair workers. In most cases these cancers are directly attributed to occupational asbestos exposures. Options for mesothelioma treatment and therapies for other asbestos-related health complications are extremely limited. Most patients face a prognosis of between 6 and 18 months.Luckily we don’t employ asbestos in auto parts anymore and health complications in auto workers related to asbestos exposure should not be a problem going forward. But these materials are still in older vehicles and should be approached with extreme caution. Serious health conditions related to asbestos exposure are entirely preventable if people are aware of the materials they are working with and how to handle them.

A Letter to Fordillac Motors: Hi Tony, proprietor Fordillac Motors. I received the photos you sent me of the ‘50 Dodge. They showed the front clip nicely and the rear fender stainless and taillight lenses. I really appreciate your advice about taking my health into consideration since restoring the ‘50 Dodge was not an easy task. You may be the most honest businessman I have ever encountered. Honestly you should be rewarded, that’s why I’m enclosing a little check, the least I can do is buy you lunch. I may be going to Reading, PA in September. If I’m able to I’d still like to stop by your place and see your cars. The Fordillac sounds fascinating. I think I saw a little bit of the side of it in one of the photos. I am an ardent reader of your publication. It is a pleasure to read every page. I am a mechanical engineer and have worked on many projects. I can repair almost everything broken. I collected two garages full. As time passed on the piles increased and my ability to work wanes. My hands shake so I can’t write. My eyes are dry and I can’t weld. My memory is poor so I can’t remember what I read when I put it away. I have to say good by to my interesting projects. As one last good bye I wish you guys continued success on your great magazine.Walter Kimmel Brooklyn, NY

To my friends at Round-Up: I want to thank you folks for your donation of the Round-Up magazines for our annual car show at Oglebay Park Good Zoo. The Round-Ups were a big hit with everyone and really added more fun for everyone. The door prize subscriptions were "icing on the cake." The only problem I had was keeping our members stuffing goody-bags and putting down the Round-Ups. I get several car related magazines every month, but the Round-Up is my favorite. Dear Round-Up: I have always loved old cars and I positively love The Round-Up. It is without a doubt the very best magazine. It never goes in the garbage. When I am done with it, I give it to a friend, give it to my barber, at the hospital and even to nursing home people. Thank you.David Vanderpool Punxsutawney, PA

To: Auto Round-Up Magazine. Thank you for your contribution to the Dewey Classic Cruiser Car Show at Galpin Ford in Dewey On October 4, 2008. The event was a big success and we collected 376 pounds of food for the Yavapai Food Bank in Prescott Valley. The money that we received from entry fees and raffle tickets will be given to the Bradshaw Lions Club and the Bradshaw Mountain Shriners. Respectfully, Tom McGlincy, President of Dewey Classic Cruisers.
Keep up the good work. Very good magazine! Maurice Houser Detroit, MI

I have subscribed to "Round-Up" Magazine since 1975 or 1976 and loved every issue. For some reason (maybe because I am a "Pack-Rat" I have kept every issue in chronological order. I also like to compare prices. With economy as bad as it is I have cancelled a lot of subscriptions to a lot of magazines...but not "Round-Up" or my "Collectible Automobile" magazines...they will be the last to go....Thanks, Frank PerkinsProspect, KY

You have the best boon on the market! Harry Coggins Shelby, NC

Hey guys! Boy, did I miss the Auto Round-Up, my subscription ran out on it a few months ago. My subscription for the Truck Round-Up ran out this month. I received some money for my birthday and filled out the form necessary to have the money withdrawn from my account. I’ll try to renew my truck subscription soon. I’ve only got 9 months of this "hell" to go, then I’ll be free, and I’ll surely want to get your magazine then too! If you guys only knew the hours I’ve spent looking at the issues you sent, and I’ve loaned them to some of the guys I get along with in here. I guess none of them have gotten their own subscription though. Heck why would they, huh? I’ll be when I get out, they’ll have to! Thanks guys, Martin E. Cole Pekin, IL
